For over two decades, Disney’s Castaway Cay has been the gold standard of cruise line private islands. It’s the ultimate “Disney Bubble” packaged into a tropical paradise. But with the opening of Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on the island of Eleuthera, Disney Cruise Line fans have a massive new debate on their hands.
If you are trying to decide between an itinerary that hits the classic Castaway or the new Lookout, you need to know that these two destinations are fundamentally different.
As the saying now goes among Disney cruisers: “Castaway Cay is a Disney island with Bahamian touches. Lookout Cay is a Bahamian island with Disney touches.”
Here is the ultimate, head-to-head breakdown of how they compare across the categories that matter most to your vacation.
1. The Arrival and Logistics: Convenience vs. Commute

How easy is it to actually get your toes in the sand? This is the single biggest operational difference between the two locations, and it’s a make-or-break factor for families with small kids or anyone with mobility challenges.
- Castaway Cay: You walk off the ship, and you are immediately there. You can leisurely walk down a flat, paved path straight to the family beaches, or hop on a quick, effortless tram. It is incredibly easy to pop back onboard the ship if you forgot your sunscreen or if a toddler needs an emergency nap.
- Lookout Cay: Getting here is a serious commitment. Because Disney built an innovative, open-trestle pier to protect the local coral reefs, the ship docks far out at sea. You face a completely sun-exposed, half-mile walk (about 10–15 minutes) just to get to the island’s entrance. From there, you must take a 10-minute tram ride across the island to reach the actual beach area. Once you are at the beach, you are there for the day—popping back to the ship is a massive trek.
The walk was not as bad as many had said, wear good walking shoes and this walk will be done before you know it!
Pro-Tip for Parents: At Lookout Cay, Disney provides red wagons on a first-come, first-served basis to help tow kids across the pier. However, bringing your own lightweight, collapsible travel stroller is highly recommended!

2. The Vibe and Theming: Immersive Disney vs. Authentic Culture
If you want heavy Disney character integration, one island clearly wins. If you want natural beauty and culture, the other takes the crown.

Castaway Cay: The “Shipwrecked” Disney Fantasy
Castaway Cay features a heavily manufactured, classic Disney storyline. It is themed to look like a community of shipwrecked mariners and explorers. Everything feels cozy, perfectly manicured, and deeply “Disnified.” The foliage is lush and mature, offering plenty of natural shade.
Lookout Cay: A Celebration of The Bahamas
Located on the southern tip of the real, inhabited island of Eleuthera, Lookout Cay leaves the “shipwreck” theme behind. Instead, Disney partnered extensively with local Bahamian artists, historians, and cultural ambassadors. The architecture mimics giant, colorful shells scattered on the beach, and the heart of the island features the Goombay Cultural Center. Because it is relatively new, the native landscaping is still maturing, meaning it feels a bit more rugged, open, and noticeably hotter due to less mature tree shade.

3. The Beaches and Water: Protected Pool vs. Breathtaking Open Ocean
The actual beach layouts drastically alter what your day in the water looks like.
| Feature | Castaway Cay | Lookout Cay |
| The Sand | Coarser, classic white beach sand. | Micro-fine, incredibly soft sand with distinct pink hues (thanks to crushed coral). |
| The Water | Calm Lagoon. Protected by massive man-made breakwater rocks. It functions like a giant, wave-free swimming pool. Excellent for floating and small children. | Open Ocean. Crystal clear, jaw-dropping turquoise water, but it is subject to real ocean currents and choppy waves that can occasionally knock little ones over. |
| Snorkeling | Manufactured. You snorkel in a designated trail to find sunken Mickey statues and planted treasures, which attract some fish. | Natural. You can snorkel right off the family beach to explore a genuine, thriving coral reef with incredible natural marine biodiversity. |
4. Activities and Kids’ Spaces: Water Parks vs. Mega Splash Pads

Both islands offer incredible, supervised kids’ clubs run by Disney Counselors on land, but their active-play amenities differ wildly.
- Castaway Cay features Pelican Plunge, a floating water-slide structure out in the ocean that requires swimming to reach. It also features a modest on-land water play zone called Spring-a-Leak.
- Lookout Cay features Rush Out, Gush Out, a massive, state-of-the-art on-land water play park and splash pad. It features two thrilling corkscrew waterslides, water drums, and interactive fountains. It is universally considered vastly superior for younger kids and non-swimmers who aren’t ready for deep ocean slides.
5. The Food: Standard Backyard BBQ vs. Elevated Tropical Flavors
While both islands offer a complimentary buffet lunch on land, the menus take very different paths.
Castaway Cay (Cookies & Cookies Too)
Think of a classic Fourth of July backyard picnic. You’ll find hot dogs, standard hamburgers, barbecued ribs, grilled chicken, and potato salad. It’s familiar, comforting, and lines move incredibly fast because every buffet station is identical.
Lookout Cay (True-True BBQ & True-True Too)
The food here is a massive step up in quality and creativity. While you can still get a standard burger, the menu leans heavily into local flavor. You’ll find ginger-marinated grilled snapper, seafood jambalaya, plantains, and pigeon peas and rice.
- The Catch: Because the buffet lines feature unique, specialized stations rather than identical rows, the lunch lines at Lookout Cay can get long and crowded. Eat early (right when it opens) to avoid waiting in the sun.
6. Entertainment: Meet-and-Greets vs. The Junkanoo Festival

Both islands feature Disney characters dressed in exclusive island attire, but Lookout Cay takes entertainment to an entirely new, high-energy level.
At Lookout Cay, you can experience “RUSH! A Junkanoo Celebration.” This is a colorful, high-energy Bahamian masquerade parade filled with traditional music, elaborate authentic costumes, and local street performers. Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Daisy don custom Junkanoo-inspired outfits and dance alongside the local performers. It gives the island an upbeat, festive energy that makes Castaway Cay feel quite sleepy by comparison.
The Final Verdict: Which One is Better?
We enjoyed our time at Lookout Cay better for the following reasons: for the Bahamian theme and Junkanoo Celebration, the splash park and one of the best beaches we’ve ever seen.
Food at both islands are on par, and yes the Disney Bubble Vibes are a bit stronger at Castaway Cay, but if we had to choose 1, it would be Lookout Cay!
However both are amazing private islands that you will surely have a great time at!
