Travel to Halifax : The Best Family-Friendly Activities in Halifax, Nova Scotia

Planning a family trip to Atlantic Canada? Halifax is a rare breed of city: it’s historic enough to feel like a storybook, yet modern enough to keep kids of all ages entertained. From “ghostly” forts to interactive science labs and rugged coastal hikes, here is your ultimate guide to the best family-friendly activities in Halifax.

1. Step Back in Time at the Halifax Citadel

Perched high above the city, the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site is a must-visit. It’s not just a fort; it’s an immersive history lesson.

  • For the Kids: Sign them up for the Xplorers Program, where they can complete “missions” to earn a prize. This was a great way to learn some really unique facts and get a great look around the fort. (And they can even dress up as part of the Xplorers hunt)
  • Don’t Miss: The firing of the Noon Gun. It happens every day at 12:00 PM sharp. (Warning: it’s loud!)
  • Be sure to speak to the staff dressed in traditional gear. They are full of knowledge and are wealths of information.

2. Alexander Keith’s Brewery

You might think a brewery is just for adults, but the Alexander Keith’s Brewery Tour is a theatrical performance. Led by actors in 1820s costumes, they tell the story of Mr. Keith through songs and jokes.

  • The Treats: While adults enjoy a sample of IPA, children are served traditional lemonade or ginger ale and snacks in the Stag’s Head Tavern while listening to live East Coast music.
  • Although kids can’t enjoy the brew, they were still really engaged on how beer is made and felt as part of the experience as we were.

3. Hands-On Fun at the Discovery Centre

Located right on the waterfront, the Discovery Centre is the best indoor activity for families. We save this half-day experience less favourable weather. The kids could have stayed at the museum for hours.

  • The Galleries: Spanning four floors, you’ll find a flight gallery with simulators and an ocean gallery featuring a touch tank.
  • Best for: Rainy days or when the kids need to burn off some high-energy steam.

4. Meet Gus at the Museum of Natural History

If your kids love dinosaurs or whales, the Museum of Natural History is a central-Halifax gem.

  • The Resident Celebrity: You have to meet Gus, a gopher tortoise who has lived at the museum for over 70 years! He often goes for “walks” around the galleries at 3:30 PM.
  • There are all sorts of really interesting exhibits and hands on opportunities.

⚓ Waterfront Wonders: Ships and Sculptures

The Halifax Waterfront is one of the longest downtown boardwalks in the world. Make sure to hit these two iconic spots:

HMCS Sackville

Step aboard Canada’s Naval Memorial, the HMCS Sackville. This “Corvette” ship played a massive role in the Battle of the Atlantic.

  • Family Fun: Kids can explore the narrow hallways, the engine room, and the bridge. It’s a “hands-on” museum where you can truly feel what life was like for sailors during WWII.
  • Note: Open seasonally (typically June–October).

The Wave

You’ll see it before you reach it—a giant, blue, curling sculpture known simply as “The Wave.”

  • The Tradition: Despite the “no climbing” signs, it has become a local rite of passage for kids to try and scramble up its slippery blue surface.
  • Next Door: Once the kids have finished sliding, head right next door to the Submarine Playground for more climbing and play.

🌊 Beyond the City: Nature & Lighthouses

Hike the Trails of Crystal Crescent Beach

It was overcast and a little cool while we were visiting Halifax, but we had to take the opportunity to visit a beach. While most head to Crystal Crescent Beach for the sand, there are great discovery trails to follow. Crystal Crescent Beach is about 30 minutes from Halifax, and we are so happy we spent some time there.

  • The Trail: Follow the Pennant Point Trail for incredible rock-hopping and ocean views.
  • Why Skip the Swim? The water here is notoriously “refreshing” (freezing!). Focus on the hike and the coastal scenery instead.

Coastal Magic at Peggy’s Cove

No trip to Nova Scotia is complete without a visit to Peggy’s Cove. Located about 45 minutes from downtown Halifax, it is the most photographed lighthouse in Canada.

Arrive EARLY! We can not emphasize this enough. The tour buses started to roll in around 10am, and the experience was very different at this point. It was nice when it felt like the rocks were there just for us. We were there around 8:45am.

The Rocks: Kids will love scrambling over the massive, smooth granite boulders that surround the lighthouse.

Safety First: This is the most important rule: Stay off the black rocks. The waves at Peggy’s Cove can be unpredictable and dangerous. As long as you stay on the “white” (dry) rocks, it’s a safe and spectacular playground. Keep your eyes on your kids!

Peggy’s Cove BONUS: Six by the Sea

Within a minute walk of the lighthouse, sits a very cute collection of historic buildings called Six by the Sea. These historic buildings have been restored to host for-profit and non-for-profit business. We stopped in most of them even picking up some local treasures during our visit.

🍴 The “Hungry Family” Food Guide

Halifax is a food city. Here are two spots where you can get a great meal without worrying about the kids being too loud.

The Stubborn Goat Gastropub

Located on Argyle Street (and with a seasonal “Beer Garden” on the waterfront), the Stubborn Goat is famous for its upscale comfort food. This was our best meal all trip. Reservations are strongly recommended and they offered a great kids menu.

  • Must Order: Their Mac-and-Cheese is legendary. They offer several varieties, including a classic version that kids adore and more adventurous options for adults.
  • Vibe: Vibrant, welcoming, and perfect for a family dinner after a day of exploring downtown.

Peggy’s Cove Food Factory

After you’ve seen the lighthouse, head over to the Peggy’s Cove Food Factory in West Dover.

  • The Food: This is the place for fresh, no-fuss Atlantic seafood. Their lobster rolls and fish and chips are top-tier.
  • The Sweet Finish: They have an on-site ice cream shop with unique local flavors, making it the perfect “bribe” for kids who did a great job on the hike!

Cow’s Ice cream

Located on the waterfront in downtown Halifax, Cow’s was a business we frequented more times that I would like to admit. They have a few locations on the waterfront. This was a favourite for the kids.

Weird Harbour Espresso Bar

Weird Harbour Espresso Bar makes a mean flat white, and their breakfast cookie was like an entire meal. This was a great coffee break for just mom on a rainy afternoon.

Planning Your Trip

  • Best Time to Visit: June through September offers the best weather for coastal activities.
  • Getting Around: While downtown is walkable, you will need a car (or a tour bus) to reach Peggy’s Cove and Crystal Crescent Beach.

Where to Stay

Halifax is very walkable city. We stayed at the Homewood Suites by Hilton which was right beside the Citadel and 5-7min walking distance to the waterfront.

  • Suite Style Rooms: We were able to book a 1 bedroom suite that allowed us to decompress while the kids went to bed.
  • Free Breakfast: A breakfast buffet was included which was a great value for us!
  • Parking is NOT free, and the charged was around $30 a day.

This printable-style checklist is organized to help you navigate Halifax efficiently, grouping activities by location so you can cross them off as you go.
