If you’ve ever stood in the “Shutters” photo gallery on a Disney ship, you know the feeling. You’re looking at dozens of high-quality family shots, but the price tag for the Unlimited Digital Photo Package (usually around $195–$250 for a 4-night cruise) can give even the most dedicated Disney fan pause.
On our recent 4-night sailing on the Disney Dream, we decided to pull the trigger. Here is our honest breakdown of whether the investment paid off.
The Numbers: 100 Shots, 20 Keepers
By the end of our 4-night Bahamian adventure, we had over 100 images in our digital folder.
- The Reality: Not every photo is a masterpiece. Between blinking kids and windy beach hair, about 80% of those were “nice to have” but wouldn’t make the wall.
- The “Keepers”: We walked away with 10 to 20 “true keepers”—professional-grade family portraits that we simply couldn’t have captured ourselves with a tripod or a passing stranger’s help.
The Math: If you buy photos individually, they cost about $20 each. By getting 10+ great photos, the package has already paid for itself.
The Highlights: Professional vs. iPhone
The professionals know how to get the shots: Honestly, these photographers are taking the same shot day in and day out and know where to get the best shot. As a test, I took a picture of my kids with Donald vs. the shot from the professional with Donald. The results speak for themselves:

The “Flare” Factor: The Good and the Bad

Disney loves a “Magic Shot” (where they digitally add characters like Tinker Bell) and themed borders.
- Our Take: We weren’t huge fans of the extra flare and “stamped” designs imposed on some of the images. Sometimes, a beautiful family portrait on the Grand Staircase is all you need—you don’t always want the ship name and date across the bottom.
- Pro Tip: While you can’t always “remove” these borders from the digital files Disney provides, many families find that a quick crop on their phone’s photo editor can remove the heavier borders without losing the essence of the photo.
The Verdict: Is it Worth It?
Yes—if you commit to the hustle. The package is only worth it if you actually make the effort stop at the photographers. We made a point to visit the Atrium every evening before dinner when the backdrops were set up.
Buy it if:
- You want the whole family in the shot (no “designated photographer” parent left out!).
- You’re visiting iconic spots like Lookout Cay and want high-res memories.
- You plan on meeting at least 3–5 characters (photographers are at almost every meet-and-greet).
Skip it if:
- You are travel-light and prefer candid iPhone shots.
- You only want one specific photo (just buy the individual print at Shutters on the last night).
Quick Tips for Your Next Sailing:
- Pre-Purchase and Save: Buying the package before you board usually saves you about 15% (roughly $30–$40). We purchased the unlimited package before boarding for $200, on the ship the unlimited package was close to $275
- The “Last Night” Rule: You can cancel the package on the last night at the Shutters desk for a full refund as long as you haven’t downloaded any photos yet.
- Ask for “Clean” Shots: Don’t be afraid to ask the photographer for one shot without the “Magic” character additions if you prefer a classic look.
